Walk a Lyme or Hanover property in late July and the trees that catch your eye are almost never the ones that need work. The maples with the densest crowns, the oaks full to the brim with foliage, the white pines with branches sweeping the lawn — those are the ones a homeowner points to as the healthy ones. In practice, that full canopy is exactly what sets up the next storm failure. A dense crown acts as a sail in the first nor'easter, an interior branch with no airflow is the branch that fungal conks colonize first, and a heavy end-weight limb over a deck is the limb that comes down in the first wet snow. Proactive canopy care is the discipline of reading those signals two or three years before the weather finds them. This post is about how we approach tree pruning and canopy care on properties in Lyme, NH and Hanover, NH — what the work actually is, when it gets done, and how the call between pruning, cabling, and removal gets made.
What "canopy care" actually covers
Canopy care is the umbrella term for the mechanical interventions an arborist makes above the trunk. The industry uses four distinct operations that get confused in homeowner conversation, and understanding the difference is how you read a proposal and know what you are paying for.
Crown cleaning is the removal of dead, dying, diseased, and weakly attached branches from throughout the canopy. It opens the interior to light and airflow, reduces the material that fails first under ice and wind, and is the routine entry-level work that every mature tree benefits from on a multi-year cycle.
Crown thinning selectively reduces the density of the canopy — typically removing ten to twenty percent of the interior foliage to let light and air through without changing the overall silhouette. Done correctly, the tree looks identical from the street. Done poorly, it produces the lion-tailed stubs that fail in the next storm.
Crown reduction (also called end-weight reduction or drop-crotch pruning) shortens branches back to a lateral that can assume the leader role. This is the work that matters most on a property with a tight fork or a heavy sail — the cuts are made back to a union that can carry the new load, and the result is a smaller canopy that catches less wind.
Crown raising lifts the lowest limbs off a house, a driveway, a play area, or a service drop. On a Lyme or Hanover lot with a steep pitch, a stone wall, or a walkout basement, crown raising is often what gets done first because it returns usable space and reduces the most immediate failure modes.

End-weight reduction and structural pruning — the work that prevents the next failure
Of the four operations above, end-weight reduction and structural pruning are the two that change the failure profile of a mature tree. The others restore what the tree would do on its own in an open-grown setting; these two address the way the tree was forced to grow in the unmanaged woodlots most of our regional hardwoods came up in.
End-weight reduction is the operation that fixes a heavy outer canopy. A mature sugar maple with a full crown and a tight fork is, structurally, a billboard mounted on a single union. The outer third of the limb carries sail area out at the worst possible leverage. Reducing that outer weight back to a lateral that can carry the load takes the billboard off the union. Done correctly — with cuts made at a lateral of at least one-third the diameter of the removed limb — the tree compartmentalizes the wound, the silhouette stays close to the original, and the sail effect drops meaningfully in the next storm.
Structural pruning removes the weak forks before weather finds them. Most Upper Valley hardwoods grew up in co-dominant stems with included bark, narrow unions, and bark folds that fail first when the wind picks up. On a young tree, structural pruning establishes a single leader and trains the canopy to grow around the loads the mature tree will eventually see. On a mature tree, it is a triage operation — cleaning out the worst unions before the next ice event, leaving the rest of the canopy intact.

Cabling as a canopy-care outcome, not a last resort
A dynamic or static cable system across a tight fork is part of canopy care — installed early, on a healthy union with sound bark and no decay, cabling extends the safe life of a tree by decades. Installed late, on an already-compromised union, cabling is money spent on a system that will not save the structure the next time the union gives.
The right moment to consider cabling is after structural pruning has cleaned out the worst unions on the tree and the remaining tight fork has sound bark, no fungal conks, and a root plate that has not moved. In that situation, a cable does not stop the union from moving — it limits the movement so that a wind gust cannot flex the union far enough to crack the bark seam. Re-inspection on a cycle (typically every five to seven years for a dynamic system on a healthy hardwood) keeps the system honest.
Treated as part of a multi-year canopy plan — pruning first, then cabling on the candidates that warrant it, then reassessment on a cycle — cabling is one of the cheapest ways to keep a mature tree on the property for another generation. Treated as a one-off, it almost always disappoints.
A quarterly and annual cadence for Lyme & Hanover properties
Most of what counts as prevention is mechanical — what a homeowner can walk with their own eyes every quarter and what they should hand to an arborist annually. The cadence below is roughly what we recommend for Lyme and Hanover properties with two or more mature trees on the lot.
Each spring — once the ground has thawed and before full leaf-out — walk the property after a rain. Look for sunken soil around root plates, new leans on trees you previously considered vertical, and any branch that failed but did not fall. Spring is also the time to schedule structural pruning on any tree that lost material in the prior winter, while the canopy is bare enough to see the unions.
Each summer — after the canopy fully leafs out — walk again and look for any change in the silhouette. A sudden lean, a wilting crown on one side, or the appearance of a fungal conk is information that goes onto the calendar. Dense crowns that did not need thinning last year may need it this year; a tight fork that was borderline in spring may be overdue for cabling once the sail area is in full leaf.
Each fall — before the first hard freeze — walk a third time. Look up into the canopy for any dead or hanging limbs; in a storm region like ours these are the failures that land on a vehicle, on a roof, or on a service drop in the first nor'easter of the season. Schedule end-weight reduction on the trees that carried the most sail area through the summer, and clean out the deadwood that the autumn wind will find.
Once a year, ideally in late winter before the mud season, have an ISA-certified arborist on the property for a written assessment. The assessment is the document your insurance carrier reads if a failure happens, it is what drives any pruning or cabling work for the coming year, and it is the cheapest insurance you can buy for a mature tree inventory.

When the call is pruning vs. cabling vs. removal
Not every tree warrants the same plan. Some are pruning candidates for decades — the canopy stays healthy, the unions are clean, and the species compartmentalizes well. Some are cabling candidates now and pruning candidates later. And some are removal candidates now, regardless of how strongly the homeowner feels about keeping the tree on the lot.
The judgment is structural, and it has more to do with the condition of the union and the root plate than with the species. A tree with a tight fork, sound bark, no decay at the union, and at least a reasonable root plate is typically a candidate for cabling and end-weight reduction if the species is long-lived and the rest of the canopy is good. A tree with decay at the union, a lifted root plate, a lean that has worsened over years, or a stem that has already partially failed is a removal — no amount of pruning changes the union, and cabling an already-compromised tree is paying for work that does not buy you the additional life you would expect.
When the call is removal, the work is piece-by-piece dismantle with rigging to protect the lawn and the plantings underneath.
